Course Review: Reston National Golf Course – A Local Gem Worth Protecting

Played a Saturday morning round with a pre-range tee times. The total cost with cart was $91 — fair value for a public course in the area. Check-in was quick and easy. The pro shop is on the smaller side, and while they had some essentials, I always find there’s room for more women’s golf gear (ladies, you feel me!).

Considering the recent rain, the course held up better than expected. The greens did show some mildew, and the rough was thick and punishing — definitely demanded some shot discipline. We teed off around 8:00 AM with three tee times back to back, and the round wrapped up in about 5 to 5.5 hours.

The weather was a journey: Misty and foggy at the start, warming up fast — by the back nine, it was a full-blown 100° and sunny. Staff and players were all friendly. The course has a full driving range and outdoor seating for food and beverages — solid options post-round.

What stands out most about this course is its setting. Once surrounded by nature, it’s now slowly being boxed in by development. If you’ve followed Beltway Golfer or recent local news, you know there’s been pressure to redevelop the land. But it’s clear the local community cares — many nearby homes proudly display signs to “Save the Course” and push back against replacing it with condos.

This course is always a stop I make at least once a year, and I’ll continue to support it. Public golf like this matters — for the game, for the community, and for keeping some green space in the mix.
